Search Engine Optimization Guide for beginners – URL Structure

Continuing the series on Search Engine Optimization guide for beginners, in this article we will explain how proper URL structure can improve the site's chances of ranking higher in Google and other search engines.

By creating descriptive categories and filenames for the web pages of your website, you not only keep the site better organized and systematic, but it can also benefit you in terms of good rankings on Google for your keywords. Since the search engine bots can easily crawl your organized website, search engines will be able to glean much more information from your site. Webmaster can also create search engine friendly URLs. These URLs are not only more legible and easier to understand, but also are better for those who want to place your webpage link on their website. Long and cryptic page names may put off or scare visitors. Page names (URLs) like these can be confusing and intimidating and don't serve any purpose. Such URLS are difficult to remember. A small % of users always try to go a particular website by recalling its name. But in these scenarios, your URL may elude his/her memory. Many times these long URLs are shortened due to ignorance of a user or shortage of space like in twitter where the number of characters that can be entered is limited. In these cases, the link is broken. Sometimes, the URL itself is used as anchor text, if the URL contains relevant keywords, it will assist user and search engine bots in determining the true nature and substance of the web page. This is much better than an unintelligible URL with loads of parameters which does not help in any way in improving your rankings.

Also, in search engine search results pages, just below the webpage's title and description snippet, the URL to the webpage is provided. And if the search query matches the words in the URL, then those words appear in bold. This immediately signals to the user making the search that this page is relevant.

Webmaster should avoid URLs with unnecessary session IDs and parameters. While adding keywords to URL is a good idea, don't go overboard with it. A simple and intuitive directory structure also helps bots. Avoid deep nested subdirectories and also keep name of the directories relevant.

Search Engines are getting sophisticated with each passing days and unlike in earlier days, they can now crawl pages with any kind of URL structure – simple or complex. But it's in webmaster's interest to keep the URL as simple and relevant as possible. Few minutes and bit of care in selecting and making search engine friendly URL can help both users and search engines in long run. This can also be done using URL rewriting technique in case of dynamically generated web pages.

Adhering to above mentioned guidelines can benefit any webmaster in more than one way. User Interaction ease as well as benefits from better rankings makes these suggestions important in today's highly competitive business scenario. So be wise.

How to Optimize and Promote your Website for Google, Yahoo and MSN?

Website development is not a tough job. You can either do it by your own or can hire a professional designer. It’s a onetime work and you can manage it easily. But the important thing to succeed in web based business is to make your website on the top ranks on the major search engines – Google, Yahoo and MSN.

How you will do this? First of all, your fundamentals of search engine optimization should be clear. Your website should be fully optimized. There are some key factors that play a crucial role in making your web pages fully optimized and search engine friendly. From my five year experience in the field of internet business, I am summarizing the important factors that you should keep in mind when designing your website.

1. The content of the website comes first when talking about SEO. Make your content informative, simple with 4-6% keyword density of your major keyword. Do not stuff your content with plenty of keywords. This makes readers as well as search engines to consider your website as spam.

2. Title of the webpage should tell about the webpage content in a short brief. For example if you are talking about arthritis pain relief through natural remedies, then your title should be like – ‘Natural Remedies for Arthritis Pain Relief’ and not ‘Arthritis’ or ‘Arthritis Pain Relief’. Make it little descriptive with 6-8 words.

3. Meta tags like keyword and description should also be clear and talks about your webpage content. Description helps search engines as well as users to guess a little about your webpage content. It tells about the content of your webpage and a well written description can put your website apart from your competitors.

4. Inter-cross linking of the pages helps search engines to crawl easily. It also helps users to refer to the related pages. This increases the time your visitors spend on your website. And as a result it increases your website reputation in search engines.

5. Sitemap is also important to allow search engine robots to crawl your website easily. It is recommended to submit your XML sitemap to the Google webmaster tool. If you have no idea about XML or how to make the sitemap, you can use online sitemap generators to create your website sitemap with ease.

6. Back links is another important concern when talking about SEO. Your website needs a lot of quality back links in order to rank well in major search engines. Make a habit of writing and submitting at least 2 articles a day in all major article directories daily.

7. Directory submission, forum posting, free blogging are the highly recommended way you can make quality back links. The more back links your website have, the more chances your website will be on top ranks in search engines.

These are some of the important factors that play a key role in optimizing your website for Google, Yahoo and MSN. Follow the above simple SEO rules and you will start seeing the difference in your internet business.

Learning the art of driving traffic to your web pages is definitely a must if you are to really succeed with your business online. Although money is mostly involved when it comes to advertising any product or service, a lot of entrepreneurs would strongly favor cost free methods of advertising.

You may think that it's not easy to increase web page traffic at zero cost. I tell you, that is absolutely correct. The reason is, even if you are able to discover these techniques, you would still have to consider the presence of your competitors who will of course not make life any easier for you. But then again, I still look at competition in a positive way. Because of competition, success will only belong to those few who will stand out from the rest. Meaning, only the most determined, persistent, and those with the strongest desire to succeed will get it.

Having said all that, here are some tips you can apply to increase web page traffic for free.

Building a blog that supports your main website

Blogs are known to be well loved and recognized by the search engines. If yours is already a blogsite, then you definitely have an extra advantage over your competitors already. However, if yours is just a static kind of site, creating a blog under your sub-domain is advisable if you don't want to be messing anymore with your current home page's style and structuring. But the main point here is that building a blog that regularly gets freshly written content will surely boost your site traffic.

Adjusting your website's internal linking structure

When search engine spiders crawl your website, that is the time when they get to discover about your site as a whole and what it is all about. This crawling process is the time when the search engines find out about your individual web pages and what content does each web page consist of.

So, if your web page links are all strategically placed in good visible positions, then you are helping these search spiders to find them fast and crawl the entire site smoothly. Do you see websites whose web page links are organized into categories and sub-categories? These are good examples to model your websites after.

Constant writing of page content and articles

I bet you already know about the famous online marketing quote that says "content is king"? Whether you agree with this or not, I just got to tell you straight right now that this statement is absolutely 100% true and accurate. It seems to be that everything online has just got to have something to do with content.

SEO or Search engine optimization is highly dependent on content. Gaining the trust of potential customers, this too is highly dependent on how true and what kind of content you have for them. Making readers stick to your website and keeping them coming back, this too is highly dependent on the quality of content you offer these readers. And yes, your constant writing and publishing of high quality content and articles is a sure solution to increase web page traffic fast and continuously.

10 SEO Tips To Boost Your Organic Ranking

Search engine optimisation is a term the experts use when they adjust different elements of your website to make it easier for the search engine spiders to find you, to improve the relative ranking of your website compared to other websites and as a result to boost the number of customers visiting your website.

Your organic ranking is your natural ranking on search engines. The higher you appear on search engine listings, the more people will visit your website.
While there are many hundreds of factors search engine optimisation (SEO) companies' work with, here are the top 10 tips to boost your organic ranking.

1. Clean navigation.

Some of the most important factors in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) are clear navigation paths throughout your website. This serves two purposes:- you want your customers to be able to find what they are looking for using as few clicks as possible and you also want search engine spiders to be able to find their way to all of your pages. By making sure your website is easy and logical to navigate around, you will make it easier for search engines to find you (and all of your sub-pages).

2. Clear internal page links.

Unless each page is cleanly and logically linked to other pages within your website, you will reduce your rankings. If a page is not linked to any other page, generally the search engines will not be able to find it, index it and rank it. You also need to consider adding and submitting a site map to the major search engines to assist them index all of your pages.

3. High quality inbound links.

Links to your website from high quality (higher ranking) websites that are directly relevant to your site content is a great strategy to boost your rankings. Links from government and education sites are particularly useful strategies to boost your organic rankings when they are relevant to your content.

4. One theme.

Search engines try to determine what your website is about in order to rank it and to know for which search terms to show your website in the results. One way they do this is to work out what is the overall theme or topic of your website. You will get the best organic results if you have one clear overall theme or topic for your website rather than trying to cram in lots of totally different parts of your business under the one website banner.

5. One theme per page.

Each website page stands alone. The best rankings come from dedicating individual pages to a specific theme. For example: large fitting wedding shoes rather than just wedding accessories.

6. Use words instead of graphics of words.

If you are using a word as a heading or sub heading on your page, the temptation is to make it look beautiful by making it a graphic jpg or gif. This is costing you rankings. Search engines read words and not images. If your word is an image it will be invisible to the search engine. You also need to ensure any pictures you use in your website have ALT tags present to ensure people with visual disabilities can also read your website. These ALT tags can be read by the search engine spiders.

7. Headlines.

Following on from the previous point, at the top of the page you need to have a clear headline that describes the content of that page in a Heading tag. This headline needs to be keyword rich and located at the right place on the page for maximum results.

8. Keywords are critical.

Keywords are the words people type into a search engine to find you. You need to know the most common keywords people use to find sites such as yours and make sure these keywords are reflected in your web copy. Determining the correct keywords is an art form as well as a science.

9. Copy is king.

The words you use on your page are critical for search engine success. You need to ensure your keywords are naturally scattered throughout your page rather than artificially added to the end of sentences or standing alone in your text. You need to walk a fine balance between interesting and enticing copy for your reader and optimised copy for the search engines.

10. Don't double up.

It is important to have fresh and different content on each page of your website. If you double up on the information you will cost yourself rankings.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) does not have to be difficult, it just needs to be worked at on a regular basis for maximum results.

Basic website search engine optimization

You know that the text in your landing pages, tags, and titles is one of the most important and long-standing SEO factors. This week you’re going to optimize them, with the goal of creating a better environment for your target audiences, not to mention positively influencing how search engines view and rank your website. You’ll also tackle basic site-linking strategy to ensure that search engine robots have easy access to your landing pages. With these improvements in place, your site will have a basic level of optimization: nothing tricky or fancy, and no time wasted on tiny technicalities, just common-sense, best-practices solutions. Remember, there is no single silver bullet in SEO.

Pearl of Wisdom: Site optimization usually includes many little efforts, which in combination bring better presence on search engines.

You’ll keep track of all your changes in one document as you go, you’ll deliver this document to the folks in charge of making edits to your website. If you’re the code-slinger on the project.
Page Titles

You know that HTML page titles show up as the first line of clickable text in most search engine results. That fact, along with their considerable influence in search engine ranking algorithms, makes HTML page titles one of the most important optimization spots on your website.

Today, you’re going to take a stab at writing unique and compelling page titles for each of your landing pages. We’ve created a document where you can keep track of these edits, called the Site Optimization Worksheet.

Full-Speed Ahead

SEO is a long-term maintenance activity, comprising both productive spells and waiting periods. Your SEO Plan is designed so that your waiting time (waiting for site owners to get back to you, waiting for your team to implement your recommendations,waiting for the search engines to notice what you’ve done, and so on) isn’t spent idly. Rather, you’ll use this time to take on new activities. And even though you’ll constantly move into new SEO territory as the plan progresses, you’ll periodically come back to revisit and continue the work you started in earlier weeks.

The one exception is paid search management, which requires frequent quick checks. So after your pay-per-click account gets rolling next month,we’ll ask you to incorporate these quick checks into days that are designated for other tasks. No fair trying to sneak in and start the Plan without getting organization-wide buy-in for your top keyword choices! If you haven’t done so, do it now.Your time is too valuable to waste on the wrong terms or to swing and miss with your conversion goals.

You’ll want the Quick Reference sheet you created last month handy to keep you in tune with your goals and keywords as you write. We’ve compiled some do’s and don’ts to keep you on the right track:

DO keep it short. Like those old telephone answering machines that cut you off before you finish talking, most search engines display only 40 to 60 or so characters in the listing title. So to get your message across, include important keywords toward the beginning of the title, and make sure that the first 40 to 60 or so characters of your title form a complete thought.

DO include your keywords… Your HTML page title is important in the ranking algorithm, so it must include your target keywords! Since your space is limited, focus on the two to three keyterms that you previously matched with your landing page. Feeling a bit squeezed by the 40-to-60-character cutoff? Remember that you can combine keywords to save space.

…but DON’T overdo it! First and foremost, you want to connect with your intended audience. Excessive keyword repetition is a shortsighted strategy. Is this a marketing message or a synonym sandwich?

Remember to think of the big picture! Your approach to site optimization will affect more than just ranks… it will also affect your visitors’ decision to part with their time and money.

DO include your name. Your organization’s name will not only differentiate your listing from your competitors’, it may also earn you more clicks. Maybe your name carries a good reputation with it, or maybe it provides important context, making your listing more attractive or relevant. Notice how the company names in the following listings provide crucial context for the search term “bass articles.”

Since each of your landing pages is already targeting a unique subset of your top-priority keywords, you can always find a different angle for each page title. Give each of your landing pages the chance to shine on its own merits.

DON’T duplicate site navigation in the title. Whether generated automatically or written by hand, page titles are often used as a place to mirror the navigational structure of a site. We won’t say “Never” for this because, if your site sections are named well, it can be an effective way to display keywords. For example, a furniture store might have a landing page titled “Frank’s Furniture – Patio Furniture – Wicker.” This works the navigation text is very brief and includes target keywords. But most sites aren’t built this way, and you don’t want words like “Index,” “Main Page,” or “Our Products” to take up space that’s best reserved for your targeted marketing message.

DO think of formulas for larger sites or blogs. If your site contains a larger number of landing pages, you’ll do well to write out a couple of formulas. Patterns like “Joe’s Sauces: {Sauce Name}” can translate into zesty titles for large swaths of your website. Bloggers, a simpler formula for your titles could be: “{Blog Name} – {Post Title}.” DO use title case. In our experience, Titles With the First Letters Capitalized get clicked more.

Back In Time To The Advent Of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

As long as the Internet has been around, it has remained a mystery to the mainstream public how Web sites are listed at the top of search engine results. There are many theories of how search engines and search engine optimization (SEO) initially began.

The 1990s

Alan Emtage, a student at the University of McGill, created the first “search” program in 1990 called Archie (still in use today), to archive Web documents. The following year, Gopher started at the University of Minnesota, and this is when the concept of search engines began. In 1993, Matthew Gray created the World Wide Web Wanderer, the earliest known search engine robot that assists with ranking Web sites. But search engines as we use them today were born in 1994. In that same year, Galaxy, Lycos and Yahoo! were all started, two of which are still widely popular search engines today.

Yahoo! was among the first to implement SEO techniques, even though at the time they were unaware of the potential growth the industry would soon have at the turn of the century. Yahoo! Founders David Filo and Jerry Yang were trying to get their site seen by others on the Internet by giving it more exposure. Some excellent structure and tricky hand-coding, their site became more available for new visitors. They were not questioned about ethical business practices because nobody was sure what was considered ethical or unethical – there were simply no standards in place yet.

As the initial search engines were cataloging the early Internet, many business owners soon learned to appreciate the value of their Web site being listed in the search engines, as they first saw increases in visitors to their Web sites. They began submitting their URLs on a continuous basis, and changed their sites to support the needs of search engine robots. SEO companies started showing up, when they began experimenting with the concept of search engine optimization, with the emphasis initially on the submission process alone. Soon afterwards, the first automatic submission software was released, and it was then the notion of Spam came into existence.

The 2000s

SEO professionals have been seen in a negative light over the last five years, due in part because in early 2001, enthusiastic webmasters quickly realized they could overwhelm search engine result pages by over submitting Web sites. Unfortunately, as the Internet industry developed, search engines quickly became cautious of new SEO companies attempting to generate visitors for their clients at any cost, however unfair or unethical. Tactics such as keyword spamming, doorway pages, cloaking, and hidden white text placed on white backgrounds proved too much for the search engines to tolerate. As a result, the search engines replied with numerous countermeasures, created to filter out any techniques considered spam. That is good news, although it forced ethical SEO companies to start using more subtle techniques to assist their clients Web sites with obtaining rankings in the engines.

The “big 3” search engines, Google, MSN and Yahoo!, have recently come to the realization that SEO as an industry is here to stay, and to maintain effective results, they needed to accept the industry, even embrace it, and engines eventually partnered with successful, ethical SEO companies to establish typical standards for fair and ethical optimization. This is important to help keep information relevant and beneficial to visitors while still being unbiased to people who create the content on their Web sites.

The Current State of SEO

Today, there are major differences in how search engines work and how to get ranked in them. With the assistance of proper search engine optimization, Web sites can now have a equal fighting chance of obtaining high rankings. Because SEO is a highly specialized trade that requires both technical skills and business marketing knowledge, it is only through the combination of these two skills that one can properly implement SEO techniques to obtain high search engine rankings. Many SEO specialists have since now realized it is “search engines or bust.”

Search Engine Marketing...What Does It Take to Rank These Days?Intro.

Search engine marketing has changed so drastically over the past few years, that one wonders where it may be heading next. Currently, Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engine host 95% of all searches done online, and there doesnt seem to be any signs of serious changes. But what can we do to rank highly in them consistently?

One-way links

It seems that intersite linking is all the rage, and most know that just exchanging links with random websites will not get you the rankings you want, and they are right. The days of exchanging links with any and every website out there are over, and have been over for sometime.

One is better off identifying their niche, and focusing on obtaining one-way links from websites and directories. This can be done in a variety of ways such as:

* writing articles and submitting them to directories
* submitting your website to top directories such as joeant and skaffe
* giving away free information with the stipulation the user link to where they got the material, which is you
* Actively participating in forums that match your products, and niche
* Start a blog and keep it updated

Tags

Fortunately, there are head tags that still work over all search engines. The title tag, and the description tag. Meta tags no longer matter in Google, and Yahoos search engines, though they are still weighted by msn. Msn actually likes this tag quite a bit, so I would recommend still using your keyphrases in this head tag.

Link Exchanges

Yes, link exchanges still work. Believe it. Though there are quality standards these days.

* Only exchange link with websites that are in your general niche market. For example, if had a fishing related website, I would not want to exchange links with a cleaning service website.

* Do not exchange with website with a single page link directory, with 200 links on it. First off, Google only indexes the first 100 links on each page, and secondly, these tpyes of sites are starting to be punished by Google, yahoo.

* Only exchange with a website that has a clearly defined link directory, that is broken down into categories, and is linked from their homepage.

* Do not exchange with websites that have a PR of 0.

Keep at it

This could quite possibly be the key to ranking for competitve phrases. You have to stay positive, and keep working steady, everyday. This of course, comes with the stipulation that you have identified the best keyphrases for your site, and are confident of your ability.

Rankings do not happen overnight, and for more competitive phrases, might not happen within the year. This is the harsh truth, but, with the right knowledge, and strict work ethics, you can certainly achieve the success you expect online.

5 Tricks In Choosing The Right Keyword

Regardless of whatever online business model you have established, you will need traffic. And the best way to generate traffic is through the implementation of sound Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques.

Central in every SEO campaign is the selection of the right keyword or key phrase to focus on. This is a very integral part of the process. Make a mistake with this area, and your online business can potentially crumble into obscurity.

How do you select the right keyword or key phrases for your traffic generation tactics? Here are 5 vital considerations you should keep in mind:

1. Choose a keyword that has a high demand. How can you establish this? Simply determine the number of times a particular keyword has been searched for by internet users all over the world. You can do this by using the free tools at www.inventory.yahoo.com or www.nichebot.com . Just type in the keyword you have in mind, and results of related keywords and key phrases will appear, as well as the number of times they have been searched for within a certain period. Overture has been bought by Yahoo, so more or less, you’d have a great barometer of a keyword’s demand through the stats provided by one of the internet’s most widely used search engine. You will want to choose keywords that have high number of searches.

2. Choose a keyword that is being catered to by fewer websites. Each website that is devoted to the keyword you are considering is your competition. The fewer the competition you will have, the more successful you will be in securing the market attached to such a keyword. Internet marketing, after all, still follows the basic rule of business, which is taken from the basic rule of economics: low supply plus high demand equals to a highly profitable industry. If you’ll be one of only a few enterprises catering to a particular keyword, then you’d have better chances of generating traffic from the same.

3. Choose a keyword that fetches a number of relevant ads. If you’re enrolled with Google AdSense, you can run a search of the said keyword at www.google.com . On the results page, notice the row of links on the right side. These are PPC ads. They are, more or less, the same ads that will appear on your own web pages if you’d decide to use the same keyword. As a rule, choose the keyword that fetches at least 5 relevant ads. This is to ensure a higher Click Through Rate (CTR) for your PPC campaigns. You wouldn’t want non-relevant ads to populate your web pages, otherwise, your CTR will terribly suffer.

4. Choose a keyword that has a high Cost Per Click (CPC). This is especially true if your business is involved with Pay Per Click (PPC) models like the ones that are enrolled with Google AdSense, AdBrite and Yahoo Advertising. A high CPC will ensure bigger profits for you. PPC programs pay you every time a visitor of yours will click on a particular ad that is displayed in your pages. If the CPC is high, you’d receive more per click. How can you know the going rate for some keywords? You can try to make a search at www.adsensearena.com and the corresponding CPC for quite a number of keywords will appear. Or you can try Overture’s tool, found at http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/d/USm/search/tools/bidtool , to determine the bidding price for certain keywords.

5. Choose a keyword or a key phrase that are used by people who have the mindset to buy. Determining this is quite easy. Casual internet users who are only looking for certain bits of information during their free time usually use one or two words for their search terms. But people who are ready and willing to buy something usually type in three or more words as their search term. Hence, it can prove to be more profitable to focus of keywords or key phrases composed of three or more words so that you’d be able to attract such a market.

Black Hat SEO | SEO Traffic Spider

Black Hat SEO attempts to employ techniques that are not recommended as part of a good SEO design. This is because it focuses on improving page rankings using deceptive tactics which are disapproved by search engines. One basic truth that one needs to know about Black Hat SEO is that it may produce a high web page ranking, however, these results may only last temporarily since sites using such techniques will eventually be banned or penalized when they are discovered utilizing these tactics. This penalty on using Black Hat SEO techniques can either be in the form of reducing the website’s ranking or totally removing the site’s listing from the database through search engine algorithms or by manually reviewing the website.

There are several approaches that webmasters can adopt in Black Hat SEO. These can range from keyword stuffing, page stuffing, invisible text, farm links to many more similar techniques to deceive search engines and obtain maximum visibility and ranking. These methods do not adhere to search engine rules and regulations and create a poor user experience.

Some Common Black Hat SEO Techniques:
Keyword Stuffing - By keyword stuffing we mean distorting search engine results by overloading the web page content with long lists of keywords you wish to rank for. It involves repeated use of a word or phrase to improve a page’s relevancy.

Hidden Text – This involves inserting text that is mostly repetitive use of keywords usually placed at the bottom of the page. This hidden text is text colored to blend with the background of the page and is invisible to the user visiting the page. The concept behind this Black Hat SEO strategy is that the search engine spiders can detect the hidden text even if people cannot see it as these spiders read the page’s content through the HTML code. Few search engine spiders can make out and also disregard any text that is used to blend with the page’s background color.

Page Stuffing – This is another widely used technique to attract traffic from search engines. Here the variations of the web page that is replicated or slightly changed are submitted to the search engine. The possibility of all these variations resulting in top rankings on the search engine is high if the page does well for a particular word or phrase.

Cloaking – Page Cloaking means using one webpage for the search engine that crawls the site and then altering the webpage to show another page to users. This alteration of web pages is used as a practice to trick the search engines. This can deceive users about the content they will see when clicking on the search results.

Meta Tag Stuffing – Meta Tag Stuffing is another technique of adding keywords in a webpage without overloading the page with keywords. However, when using this tactic, high traffic keywords are placed in the page which is totally irrelevant to the web page content. This is done only to boost additional traffic to the site regardless of the fact that these keywords do not match the website content.

Link Farming – Link Farming involves exchanging shared links with other websites to enhance SEO. The main purpose behind this tactic is to increase the amount of websites that will link to your site. This is because search engines like Google rank websites based on the quality and quantity of other websites linking to your site. You can gain a top ranking in search engine results if more sites are linked to yours as this signifies that your site has high popularity among internet users. However, link farming is considered to be a spamming technique and can lead to your site getting banned.

Cheating the system through all these Black Hat SEO techniques temporarily boosts visitor traffic; however, since users usually don't like to be deceived, the profitability of these methods is questionable. People would not like to visit a site that does not offer what it claims to be. Besides, majority of the search engines also impose penalty on web sites employing Black Hat SEO tactics, which signifies that webmasters gain a short term victory and a long term failure.

Black Hat SEO may be quite tempting to use as it does produce the desired results, though temporarily. But its really not worth the risk for the spamming techniques it uses and can potentially lead to your site getting banned. Therefore, it is advisable to use efficient and ethical search engine optimization (White Hat SEO) to get a higher ranking for your site.

10 SEO Tricks to Attract More Traffic to Your Blog

As fancy as the term "blog" sounds, it's actually just a website that uses a content management system. While most blog software is more search engine friendly out of the box than many web sites, the opportunities for blog optimization are readily available.

Here are 10 tricks that will increase your visibility in search engines and eventually drive more traffic to your blog.

1) Use keywords in your blog post titles - This is a given for SEO. Most blogging software uses the post title as the url so take advantage of it.

Example: "10 SEO Tricks to Attract More Traffic to your Blog - Search Engine Journal" Search Engine Journal is included on every blog post title tag automatically.

2) Optimize your blog categories - When you create categories for your blog, be sure to use keywords in the titles. When you post, be sure to default to a general category that is relevant no matter what the post is about. Choose multiple categories on each post when appropriate. This will create a "SEO-friendly" url for each post you make.

3) Syndicate your blog - Make it easy for people to subscribe to your blog. Sign-up with a free service like Feedburner and then create a "syndication" area on your site.

4) Offer RSS to email. Anywhere from 10% to 40% of your blog traffic can come from individuals that perfer to read blog posts via email. RSS readers and aggregators can be confusing. Adding email services to your blog isn't. There are several free services available for this including: FeedBlitz, Squeet, and Zookoda.

5) Ping blog search engines - This can be configured with blog software such as Movable Type or WordPress to work automatically. If you're using Blogger.com, then you can do this manually with Pingomatic.com or Pingoat.com.

6) Make comments on other blogs. Your name will be linked to the blog url that you enter. Don't make comments that offer no value to the blog post. Don't use keywords in the field for your name, use your name or blog name.

7) Submit your blog directories. Also submit the blog to regular directories such as (DMOZ, JoeAnt, GoGuides, Google Blog Search, etc) that have categories for blogs.

8) Targeted advertising - Now this doesn't really drive traffic to your site but will make you money. It's possible by using Google AdSense to display highly targeted ads on your blog. Once you've setup an account and placed the ads on your site, just sit back and watch the cash come in. Cha-ching.

9) Snatch up hot keywords - Now before you place ads on your blog, be sure your keyword density is good for the right terms. A great tool to improve your traffic for high-paying keywords is to use a product called Keyword Elite (http://www.seojuice.com).

10) Use track backs - If there is a blog that you refer to or quote and it is highly relevant to your subject, leave a track back. It increases your link popularity and may even score a few interested readers from the linked site. A TrackBack is a mechanism used in a blog to show, around an entry, a list of other blogs that refer to it.

Summary The important thing to remember is that no matter how many optimization tactics you employ with a blog, there is no substitute for quality content. Blog optimization is only as effective as the quality and usefulness of the content you're optimizing. So do not limit yourself to tips and lists. Use your imagination and you will come up with thousands of ways to drive traffic to your blog!

SEO Tips

Not only is there out of date or invalid SEO advice getting around, there is also information which if acted upon, can result in your pages being banned.

The SEO tips below should assist the reader in forming a basic understanding of how to create human friendly web pages which are easily understood by the most popular search engines.

Know this. There are thousands of search engines but only two of them will bring you most of the traffic. They are google and yahoo. Another search engine that brings me a little traffic is msn but I do not focus too much on tactics for that engine.

Focus your attention on the engines that will bring you the most visitors first and work your way down.

Basic SEO

1. Insert keywords within the title tag so that search engine robots will know what your page is about. The title tag is located right at the top of your document within the head tags. Inserting a keyword or key phrase will greatly improve your chances of bringing targeted traffic to your site.

Make sure that the title tag contains text which a human can relate to. The text within the title tag is what shows up in a search result. Treat it like a headline.

2. Use the same keywords as anchor text to link to the page from different pages on your site. This is especially useful if your site contains many pages. The more keywords that link to a specific page the better.

3. Make sure that the text within the title tag is also within the body of the page. It is unwise to have keywords in the title tag which are not contained within the body of the page.

Adding the exact same text for your h1 tag will tell the reader who clicks on your page from a search engine result that they have clicked on the correct link and have arrived at the page where they intended to visit. Robots like this too because now there is a relation between the title of your page and the headline.

Also, sprinkle your keywords throughout your article. The most important keywords can be bolded or colored in red. A good place to do this is once or twice in the body at the top of your article and in the sub-headings.

4. Do not use the exact same title tag on every page on your website. Search engine robots might determine that all your pages are the same if all your title tags are the same. If this happens, your pages might not get indexed.

I always use the headline of my pages as the title tag to help the robots know exactly what my page is about. A good place to insert the headline is within the h1 tag. So the headline is the same as the title tag text.

5. Do not spam the description or keyword meta tag by stuffing meaningless keywords or even spend too much time on this tag. SEO pros all agree that these tags are not as important today as they once were. I just place my headline once within the keywords and description tags.

6. Do not link to link-farms or other search engine unfriendly neighborhoods.

7. Do not use doorway pages. Doorway pages are designed for robots only, not humans. Search engines like to index human friendly pages which contain content which is relevant to the search.

8. Title tags for text links. Insert the title tag within the HTML of your text link to add weight to the link and the page where the link resides. This is like the alt tag for images.

My site contains navigation menus on the left and right of the page. The menu consists of links not images. When you hover over the link with your mouse, the title of the link appears. View the source of this page to see how to add this tag to your links.

9. Describe your images with the use of the alt tag. This will help search engines that index images to find your pages and will also help readers who use text only web browsers.

10. Submit to the search engines yourself. Do not use a submission service or submission software. Doing so could get your site penalized or even banned.

Submit only once. There is no need to submit every two weeks. There is no need to submit more than one page. Robots follow links. If your site has a nice link trail, your entire site will get indexed.

My site has a nice human friendly link trail which robots follow easily. All my pages get indexed without ever submitting more than the main index page once.

SEO Tips For New Webmasters

We decided to make a quick list of SEO Tips for new webmasters or website owners to help eliminate all the confusion and outrageous claims of secrets and backdoor methods. Make no mistake about it, there are what are termed "blackhat" SEO techniques. But they rarely provide any long term value since they are quickly found and eliminated by the search engines, and punishment is swift.

A lot of people want to make search engine optimization appear to be highly technical and secretive. If you go to any of the popular search engines information pages, they give you the basic guidelines and even provide some good ways to check your website for potential problems. There are no secrets, the exact method search engines use to rank and index pages is proprietary to protect against people who would use that information to corrupt the integrity of the search results.

So to cut through some of the long and less than exciting information available on SEO, we compiled a simple list of necessary procedures to follow when creating any new website page. Which brings up another issue that may be misunderstood. Search engines rank website pages, not the entire website. Each website page stands on it's own in being ranked and indexed.

SEO can be split into two areas. One is on page, which deals with how you present and format any information. The other is off page, which deals with links that point to your website pages. Another key point is not to sacrifice user-friendly aspects for SEO methods. The visitor experience should always be considered when trying to create a search engine friendly website page.

SEO on page factors are:

Meta Tags - Your title, description, keywords, should match the content. Using your keyword phrases in each in a logical and accurate manner for both search engines and vistors is important.

File Names - The page file name, graphics alt text, and any associated files should be named using the keyword phrases or related terms as they apply.

Theme - Keyword phrases should be used in natural way a long with associated and related terms. Don't over do the keyword phrase (called "stuffing" keywords), use where necessary but don't over use. Use H1-H6 HTML tags to indicate important titles (H1 being the most important, H6 being the least). You can also use other font attributes to indicate importance like bold, italics, or even colors.

Navigation - All navigation links should use descriptive anchor text to make it easy for both the search engines and the visitors to understand the content. If you use pull down menu graphics as element of design, make sure you also include anchor text equivalents somewhere on the website page.

SEO off page factors:

Links - Off page SEO is primarily all about links to your website page from other website pages. The authority or what Google calls Pagerank, is a point of consideration, since Pagerank can flow downwards to your website page (i.e. a Pagerank is between 1-10, the higher the number the more value). The perfect link, if there is one, would be from a high Pagerank website page of similar or like content that uses anchor text that accurately describes the content of the page being linked too.

There are many opinions on the amount of Pagerank that flows down, the weighting of the content, and the accuracy of the anchor text. Your best bet is to go with the basics of all three and be done with it.

Too many new webmasters get caught up in all the nuances and details of every specific aspect of off and on page SEO. You can easily drive yourself crazy with all the different opinions and the latest tricks or trends. The search engines constantly update the mathematical algorithms they use to rank and index website pages. The search engine's goal is to produce the most accurate search results and to eliminate any attempts at beating the system.

The best SEO tip I can give is to follow the search engine guidelines, provide high value content, and always keep the visitor in mind while doing any SEO. Once a visitor arrives, you need to make sure that the information you present does its intended job, whatever that might involve. If direct sales, convert them to a buyer. Or maybe sign up for your newsletter, or additional information.

Getting tightly targeted search engine traffic is great, but always keep the visitor experience in mind when doing search engine optimization. Try not to get lost in the weeds and forget the main purpose of your website, whatever your goals. Sometimes the best SEO tips for new webmasters are to keep it simple and effective for both the search engines and the website page visitors.

SEO Tips: Link Building

This article is a follow-up to an article I wrote about On-Page Optimization (http://www.internet-search-engines-faq.com/seo-articles/seo-tips-on-page-optimization.shtml). On-Page optimization enables each of your web pages to make the most out of the mojo that they have -- but you need inbound links (http://www.internet-search-engines-faq.com/ibl-obl.shtml) to create that mojo in the first place.

I use the term "mojo" as a generic descriptor for the importance given to a web page or a web site based upon inbound links. Similar terms include page rank, site rank, trust rank, and authority. Those terms tend to carry too much linguistic baggage, so I use the term "mojo" for simplicity unless another term is specifically required.

Mojo is created by getting inbound links to your web site and to your web pages.

Getting inbound links is one of the most important, and time consuming, tasks involved in SEO.

Here are a few tips to generate inbound links. Each of these tips are appropriate for some web sites, but none are appropriate for all web sites. Select the link building strategies which are most appropriate for your specific web site.

Submit to Web Directories

Start with big slow directories like the Yahoo Directory and the DMOZ Open Directory Project, but don't stop there.

Search out the small directories which are dedicated to topics relevant to your web site.

For more suggestions on finding directories to submit to, read How can I find web directories? (http://www.internet-search-engines-faq.com/find-web-directories.shtml)

Reciprocal Linking

Write individual e-mails to specific webmasters whose web pages compliment your own and tell them that you would like to trade links with them.

Make sure to personalize each e-mail, or your e-mails will be quickly deleted as spam.

To achieve the best results from your e-mail, include the following in your initial e-mail:

* Mention two positive items about their web site, so that they know that your e-mail is not a generic spam.

* Include directions to the specific web page where you have added the link to their web site.

* Mention the Page Rank (http://www.internet-search-engines-faq.com/pr-page-rank.shtml) of the page where you have added a link to their web site.

These web sites exist to help you search for reciprocal link partners in the same market niche' as your web site:

* Find Link Partners
* Link Partner Finder
* Themes Reciprocal Link Finder

Write Articles for Other Web Sites

One method for getting inbound links is to write quality articles and submit them to other web sites for publication.

Each article should include a link back to your web site.

These links are better than links from link pages, because there tend to be very few outbound links on the article page.

Write a brief article on some topic related to the topic of your web site. Do not write an article about your web site, but write an article that would be interesting to people who would also be interested in your web site.

Send this article to webmasters who maintain web sites on topics similar to the topic of your article. Explain to them that they can post your article for free on their web sites, in return for a link to your web site.

To find web sites to submit articles for publication, visit Where can I submit an article for publication? (http://www.internet-search-engines-faq.com/submit-article.shtml)

Create and Submit Press Releases

Write press releases about your web site and submit them to press release distribution services.

To find places to submit press releases for publication, visit Where can I submit my press release?

Join a Reciprocal Link Program

Reciprocal linking programs exist to help webmasters share links with similar web sites.

Some of the reciprocal link programs are:

* Link Market
* Info Wizards
* LinkExchanged
* Link Partners
* Links-Pal
* Linkateer
* Webmaster Link Exchange
* GoTop Link Exchange ($19.95 fee to join)
* LinkLeads
* Link Traders
* LinkExchangeIt
* SiteSell
* 123ExchangeLinks
* Ads4Links
* Spocka
* Links For You

If you have a blog, try blogLinker, the automatic link swapper for blogs.

These link networks can generate a lot of e-mail. You will probably want to create a new e-mail account just for these networks.

Join the DigitalPoint Ad Network

The DigitalPoint Coop Advertising Network enables you to automatically trade links with thousands of web sites across the Internet.

Join a Reciprocal Linking Forum

Several web forums exist for the purpose of sharing and trading reciprocal links. These linking forums include:

LinkRequests
Link Trade Forum

Start a Reciprocal Linking Program on Your Web Site

You can also setup a reciprocal linking program on your own web site.

For more information on setting up a reciprocal linking program on your site, read How can I add a reciprocal link manager to my web site?

Start or Join a Web Ring

You can use an existing web ring service such as WebRing, or you can create your own web ring using the PHP-Ring webring script.

Join or Create a Top Site List

Search for top site lists which are relevant to your web site.

Add yourself to the existing lists. If no relevant top site lists exist, create one.

Provide a Useful Service

Create dynamic content on your web site which other web masters can include on their web sites by linking to it.

Every webmaster who uses your content automatically adds a link to your site.

Firearm News (http://www.firearmnews.com/news/) is an excellent example of this. If you add a small bit of JavaScript to your web page, your users will receive up-to-date news on firearms.

Of course, you will also have to contact other webmasters to let them know about your service -- perhaps even with a press release.

Seo Tips For Beginners

SEO means search engine optimization – a method that will improve the visibility of a website in the search engine listings, but you probably already know that. Then I should probably let you know what SEO is not: a magic wand that will bring your website a top 20 position over night. SEO takes time, commitment, skills and effort. SEO’s purpose is to increase relevant traffic to your website and generate more revenue.

For SEO to work you need to have a website designed according to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), that means a website without technical difficulties (flash, improper Java scripts, frames) and with a clear, user friendly design. Once you have that, start your SEO work.

As you’ve often heard, keywords are important. Don’t optimize your website for terms no one has ever heard about, but for what people might want to find on your website. Use the keywords in your Meta tags: title, description, keywords. Search engines find the title tag crucial to determine what a page is all about and index it. So don’t give the same title to all your web pages. Write a short, descriptive, keyword rich title that would also act as a sales pitch. The Meta title’s text goes on page, maybe a longer version. The higher on the page the better. Maybe you should place it in the visible title as well. Use tags.

Content is king. How many times have you heard that? Well, that’s true if we put it this way: “fresh content is king”. If you want higher rankings add new pages of content to your website on regular basis. Make them interesting and carefully place them in the right category.

Linking is also very important: both incoming and outgoing links mater. Don’t exchange links with irrelevant sites. Your linking partners should be somehow related to your industry. Linking with spammy sites and link farms will only damage your website’s position in the search engines results. It’s also a good idea to interlink the pages within your website. Don’t do it with a “click here” button, but with a keyword rich text link.

Google maps – the new trend – will help search engines find all the important web pages you want to index. It’s important that you make a site map for your visitors as well – that means a collection of plain text links to the most important categories of your website.

And here’s what you should never do: repeat words too often on a page – that’s considered keyword stuffing and will get your site penalized. Also don’t use hidden text on your pages. Google and other search engines know when you use hidden text, so don’t try to fool them. Stick to ethical SEO practices and you’ll see, in time, you will get the results you want. The key is, it takes time so be patient!

25 Simple Blog SEO and Traffic Tips

This is a nice concise list of 25 ways to greatly increase your blog's traffic and search rankings.

1) Content is king!

2) Submit your site to as many search engines as possible. After the initial indexing I would recommend resubmitting every 6 months.

3) Comment on as many blogs as possible. Make your comments thoughtful and not spammy.

4) Link up with popular blogs - trackbacks can be good for SEO as well as your traffic.

5) Write a good article and post it on a site like http://www.digg.com, although this won't help as far as traffic goes (you will get a HUGE boost for a few hours, then it will tone back down, you probably won't get any permanent readers from Digg) and it sure doesn't help with your relationship with your web host, it can create some new inbound links.

6) Use http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ . Instead of the GoogleBot searching for your pages you can tell it where your pages are. This is a great way to get your whole site indexed.

7) Content is king!

8) Get listed on web directories like http://www.dmoz.com/. Although many SEO "experts" think it is overrated no one disagrees that it can help boost your site's rankings.

9) Add some links for feed readers and blog aggregators like http://www.bloglines.com/, http://www.google.com/reader/, and http://myweb.yahoo.com/.

10) Add some social bookmarking links at the bottom of each post

11) Make it easy for your users to find your RSS feed

12) Add a "E-mail This!" link either on the header or the footer of each post

13) Content is king! (see a pattern?)

14) If you write a really good post try e-mailing the URL to some big-name bloggers with a short personalized message. You never know, they might like it and link to it.

15) Try asking some big sites who are in your niche if they would like to trade links. More often than not they will say "no", but at least give it a try.

16) Don't obsess over "get rich quick" schemes.

17) Don't obsess over "get lots of traffic really quick" schemes.

18) Submit your RSS feed to a bunch of RSS directories, http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-directory.htm has a large list of popular directories.

19) Use http://pingomatic.com/ to notify a ton of aggregators that your site has been updated.

20) Don't obsess over the numbers - it takes time to build up a good reader base.

21) Make your posts as keyword rich as possible. Whenever you can use a word that has to do with your niche, use it!

22) Use lists, especially if your site is targeted towards more tech-savvy users

23) If you have a MySpace page or a home page on a similar service put up a link to your blog.

24) Tag important keywords, using this site ( http://www.richardrodger.com/tags.htm ) you can tag keywords.

25) Last but not least, offer free stuff. Everyone loves free stuff!

The really important thing you have to remember is, just have fun. If your blog is causing you to become stressed out then it probably is not a good idea to continue blogging.

Top 3 SEO Tips of 2008

Since 1998 I've spent the first several months of each year looking for the very best search engine optimization (SEO) tips of the previous year's end. This year I've come across the best SEO tips yet.

SEO Tip #1: Make Google Alerts Your Personal Online Spy

Google Alerts is a great way to let the world's biggest search engine be your personal online spy. This takes search engine optimization insider info to whole new level. Here's an excerpt straight from Google....

"Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

Some handy uses of Google Alerts include:

* monitoring a developing news story
* keeping current on a competitor or industry
* getting the latest on a celebrity or event
* keeping tabs on your favorite sports teams"

As you probably guessed, it's the second one we care about most, "keeping current on a competitor or industry."

Here's how it works... Each time Google finds a reference to the query or topic you request you will be sent an email with the details. This is like having an online spy to make sure competitors are not using your protected keywords (trademarked names, company names, etc.) It's also an instant identifier to know when your site or product is mentioned in a news story or even when a topic is hot so you can take advantage of the situation. It's the easiest way in the world to stop competitors' dirty tricks and identify trends that you can take instant advantage of.

It's fast, free and works every minute of every day. Let Google Alerts (http://www.google.com/alerts) do your most time consuming legwork while you reap the rewards!

SEO Tip #2: Optimize Your 404 Page and Always Be Found

"Error 404: Page Not Found" is a blessing that most Webmasters curse. Why? Getting a visitor on any page of your site is fantastic! Don't blow the opportunity. Not only can you make your "404" page a valuable sales tool, you can use the following search engine optimization techniques to attract customers in droves.

A.) Use your main keyword in your title, add a "pipe" (usually above the Enter key) and then use your secondary keyword. Here's as example for an SEO site "SEO - Search Engine Optimization Tips"

B.) Add some keyword rich content using one to two keywords for the page. If you have less than 250 words on the page, just use one keyword and use it no more than three times total. Bold the first use and italicize the second or third use. Keep in mind this is an "inactive" page so simply tell the visitor what your site is about and whet their appetite with a good description. Something like this works well... "Thank you for visiting SEO (bold) Group, Inc. We are sorry you landed on a missing page but don't worry, if you're looking for the very best search engine optimizations tips (bold), you're at the right place..." This will go on for a couple paragraphs or as long as you'd like then end it with something to the effect of "Please Click Here (link) to visit our site map or click any link to the left."

C.) Add your site's standard navigation system (bar, column, etc.) as mentioned above.

D.) Make the look and feel of the customized 404 page match your main site as closely as possible with a template, matched palette, cascading style sheets, etc.

E.) Create a link to the site map page if available, and make the link easy to find. You want your visitor off the 404 page and into your main content as quickly as possible.

Setting up a custom 404 page link usually takes less than five minutes on most major Web hosting companies like Godaddy.com. But whatever it takes, it's worth the effort.

SEO Tip #3: Get (Even More) Serious About Linking

I saved the most important for last. If you want to do well on any search engine, especially Google, linking is THE single MOST important thing you can do. It's that simple.

Here are the five things you MUST do to make your site #1 on Google:

A.) Find the highest page rank sites linking to your site AND your competitors' sites.

B.) Run monthly link campaigns and snatch up the best of the above identified Web sites.

C.) Run regular checks on what pages are still linking back to your site. Alsomake sure they did not move you from a high page rank page to a lower one (don't get cheated!)

D.) Eliminate any penalized sites you link to; ASAP!

E.) Check your search engine ranking AND your competitor's for each of your keywords every week. Do this, at the minimum, for Google, Yahoo, MSN and Alta Vista.

Inside Tip: Keeping up can be a lot of work so a lot of SEO Consultants (myself included) use SEO Elite to do all the most difficult and time consuming work.

One last thing to know is that Google was originally a college student's project created for the sole purpose of defining a Web site's value by the sites that link to it. Twelve years later this is still it's main job. Linking is EVERYTHING to Google.

These few SEO tips are the very best of the best so use them wisely. Best of luck!

A Guide To Good Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Tips

Getting your website listed in Search Engines (SE) can sometime be a monumental task in itself, here are my top ten tips to get you started.

Five Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips and Tricks

Google is “Yellow Pages on Steroids”. Several businesses that used to be tiny are now 10 times bigger because of Google. Some of them hired SEO firms and others ranked their own websites. Some people even ranked first by accident. They created a website a long time ago, published some great information and time did the rest of the work.

Today I will share 5 SEO secrets that we use with our clients from all over the world. These secrets won’t rank you first by themselves; there is a lot more that you need to do, but these tips will definitely make a huge difference.

Forget About Meta Keywords and Submitting Your Site to Google

2002 is long gone; rules have changed. Meta keywords won’t help you at all and you don’t need to submit your website to Google; they will find it.

Avoid Over-Optimization

If your idea of SEO is writing a page and putting your keyword in it 50 times, forget it. If all the links pointing to your site have the same anchor text, that will affect you too. Make your content and backlinks look natural. Write for your visitors, not the search engines. A great website with outstanding information will get a lot more links than an over-optimized site.

Target Several Keywords on One Page

Choose a main keyword and then think of 5-10 keyword modifiers. For example, if your main keyword is “cowhide rugs”, add words before and after to go after secondary keywords as well. Some of these keywords could be “buy cowhide rugs”, “cowhide rugs store”, “black cowhide rugs”, etc. Notice that all these keywords have the main keyword in them.

Get Links from Social Media Sites

The advantage of social media sites is that most of them have a lot of authority and trust. Links from these sites will be worth a lot. On the downside, anybody can get links from these social media sites, but they can still help you a lot.

Some of these sites are Squidoo, HubPages, NewsVine, BizHeat, KillerStartups and Twitter (links in the bio section aren’t “nofollow”). SEOmoz has, in my opinion, the best list of social media sites you can easily get links from. You can find it here: http://www.seomoz.org/social-directory

Don’t Overlook the Holy Grail of Link Sources

I can’t believe how many people skip this step. The best place to start looking for links is people that you know and you have relationships with. We all have friends and relatives with blogs or websites. I am sure that your company has vendors; ask these people to link to you as their client. Ask your clients to link to you. Ask the organizations you belong to. How about the chamber of commerce in your city? How about local universities, libraries and community colleges?

Here’s something to keep in mind: people love linking to great content. They don’t link to commercial sites as much. So create great content and become THE place people want to go to find information about the kind of product you sell. If your information is useful, many people in your industry will love to list you on their lists of useful resources.
