SEO and meta tags The head section of an html or xhtml page is very important for the purpose of SEO. It should hold all the relevant information about your website. This information is readable by bots and search engines. Therefore it is important that the information provided here is relevant to the page so as to ensure that the search engines don't consider the information as spam. The most important tag in the head section is the meta tag. This versatile tag is used for storing information such as the name of the developer, the description of the page and keywords. The keywords used here are the most important part of information in the entire section as far as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is concerned. Following is the example how meta tags are used: meta name="author" content="the name of developer" It is a popular belief nowadays that the meta tags are not used by the search engines. This is only partly true, the search engine do not put as much emphasis on meta tags as they used to, however they are still important for SEO. One word of caution though, using too many keywords will have a negative impact in terms of SEO as the search engines tend to overlook such websites. The use of meta tags is one of the most basic techniques for SEO and should be combined with others to be effective. To make the use of keywords useful, the keywords used in the meta tags should also be used in the text of the web page. The rule of the thumb is that the key words should appear in the text five times in hundred words. Also, these key words should be clearly visible and readable for the human eyes. The meta tags combined with judicious use of the key words wins the web site some brownie points from search engines. It is important to not overdo it though, as keyword abuse is an easy way of losing SEO value directly impacting the traffic.
